The ECB published 10 new potential Euro designs, 5 of which featuring featuring Europeans of various importance, and 5 featuring european Birds.

Another feature that is visible on 9 of them are their denomination in braille. After asking, it would appear that the other design also has a Braille feature.

Hopefully anti-clickbait enough.

I noticed that the proposed designs B-J all got visible grey/black dots in the corner that are are the value of the bill written in braille, but A did not have such a thing. Thankfully, the ECB has a form to send such questions in, so I did:

I am glad to see that most of the ECB’s proposed redesigns feature braille modules for disabled Europeans. I noticed that design A did not have a visual representation of those modules present on the rendering of the bill, however. I hope this is merely because the rendering does not show physical properties of the bill (like security features or tactile bumps) Could you kindly confirm whether the ECB has plans for including the same or an equivalent tactile feature on it if it is minted? Thank you for contacting the European Central Bank (ECB) and for your interest in the euro banknotes redesign process.

We confirm that the new euro series would feature for the first time, Braille-like marks. For their development, the ECB has regularly consulted respective stakeholders, such as the European Blind Union, and will continue to do so.

We are also pleased to inform you that the ECB has now launched a public survey inviting people across Europe to provide their feedback on the shortlisted designs. The ECB’s Governing Council is expected to take the final decision on the new banknote design around the turn of the year, taking into account various inputs, including the results of the public consultation. Whatever the outcome, the new banknotes will reflect Europe’s shared heritage and values.
